There are many benefits to having a regular massage. Massage is very effective at reducing
muscular pain and tightness and also in promoting a sense of well-being. At City Physiotherapy, our
massage therapist is experienced in a range of massage techniques to help you get the best from
your massage.

  • Each session is individually tailored to each client’s needs & expectations, with emphasis on a combination of Remedial Massage and Myofascial Release. However, clients may specify preferred type of massage.

Types of Massage:

Remedial Massage / Deep Tissue Massage:

Remedial Massage / Deep Tissue Massage loosens tight and contracted muscle tissue; improves muscle flexibility and joint mobility; and increases blood and oxygen flow to tight, injured or impaired muscles and soft tissue. This aids in injury recovery and reduces the aches and pains associated with chronic tension. Compression techniques and friction along or against the grain of the muscle fibres are employed during Remedial Massage and Deep Tissue Massage, as well as kneading and stretching. Remedial Massage / Deep Tissue Massage may be beneficial to those who suffer from headaches, arthritis, spondylitis, Frozen Shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), whiplash, muscular cramps, muscular atrophy, as well as chronic tension, stress, general postural complaints and sports injuries.

Myofascial Release:

Myofascial Release addresses dysfunction in the body’s Myofascia - the web-like system of connective tissue that integrates the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the body. Poor posture, physical injury and emotional stress can cause this intricate fascial web to become constricted, giving rise to postural imbalances, reduced joint mobility and muscle aches, pains and dysfunction. Deep compression and stretching along the myofascial tracts, as well as gentle “unwinding” techniques are employed to release myofascial constrictions, thus relieving pressure on associated muscles, nerves, bones and joints. This aids in improving flexibility and mobility of joints, muscles and associated structures. Myofascial Release may be helpful for those suffering from chronic or acute back/neck strain, whiplash, Frozen Shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), fibromyalgia, plantar fasciitis, Runner’s Knee, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, TMJ dysfunction, headaches, chronic pain syndromes, as well as poor posture and associated muscular tension.

Swedish (Relaxation) Massage:

Swedish Massage promotes health and well-being by improving blood and oxygen flow to muscles; releasing toxins from muscles; gently stretching and mobilising muscle tissue, ligaments and tendons; stimulating the lymphatic system; and soothing the nervous system. Relaxing and invigorating, Swedish Massage employs effleurage (gentle gliding strokes), petrissage (kneading), friction, vibration, percussion (brisk tapping or hacking) and active or passive movements designed to gently stretch and mobilise tight muscle tissue. Swedish Massage may benefit those suffering from stress, anxiety, depression, stomach complaints and general muscular tension, and is advised as part of a regular Stress Management program.

Lymphatic Drainage:

Lymphatic Drainage is a specialised form of massage that addresses the body’s Lymphatic System. A network of vessels and glands, the Lymphatic System is the body’s front line defense against infection, and is also integral to the transportation of metabolic wastes, toxins, excess water and bacteria out of the body. The Lymphatic System can become overloaded or sluggish due to injury, infection, poor diet, inactivity or stress. Lymphatic Drainage employs superficial gliding and “pumping” techniques directed towards the heart to assist in removal of excess lymphatic fluid, toxins and metabolic waste products. Lymphatic Drainage may be beneficial to those who suffer from peripheral swelling (such as swelling associated with sprains and strains), sinus problems, fatigue, fluid retention, low immunity and swollen lymph nodes, as well as those prone to or recovering from colds, infections, sore throats and allergies.

Sports Massage:

Sports Massage utilises Remedial Massage, Myofascial Release and Lymphatic Drainage techniques in addition to active or passive stretching, vibration and percussion (brisk tapping and hacking) to reduce the tension in muscles and soft tissue that can accumulate during exercise or sporting activities. Additionally, Sports Massage may assist in the treatment and prevention of sports and exercise-related injuries. Massage prior to sporting activity or exercise may enhance performance and endurance, and minimise risk of injury. Massage following sporting activity or exercise aims to reduce muscle tension, assist in recovery, restore flexibility and aid in the removal of lactic acid and other metabolic waste products produced by muscle cells during physical activity. Sports Massage is applicable to athletes as well as anyone who engages in regular exercise.

Pregnancy Massage:

A woman’s body undergoes a multitude of changes during pregnancy. Pregnancy Massage utilises a combination of Remedial and Swedish Massage, Myofascial Release and Lymphatic Drainage to relieve the various muscular tensions and pain often experienced by expectant mothers. Although special care must be taken during the first trimester, Pregnancy Massage may be applied throughout the entire pregnancy to treat – as well as assist in the prevention of – muscular cramps, chronic muscle tension, lower back pain, and peripheral swelling. Additionally, the application of special “pregnancy safe” essential oils from the 2nd trimester, as well as the nurturing emotional support of the therapist may assist in soothing the nervous system, relieving stress and preventing insomnia during pregnancy.

Aromatherapy Massage:

Aromatherapy Massage involves the application of an individually-prepared blend of therapeuticgrade essential oils during a full-body (neck, shoulders, back, arms, legs, stomach) massage that incorporates a sequence of Swedish Massage, Remedial Massage, Lymphatic Drainage and Acupressure techniques. The essential oils are specially chosen in consultation  with each individualclient, based on their therapeutic properties. Aromatherapy Massage is a holistic treatment, and offers a wide range of physical and emotional benefits, including reduction of stress and muscle tension. It may also assist in treating stress-related ailments, low immunity, skin conditions and digestive problems.
